Original black leather spine with gilt stamped lettering and bars; dark brown cloth boards. Wear along board edges particularly at corners, small surface chips to cloth as well leaving small patches of exposed underlying cardstock. Old pencil inscription at center of front free endpaper with ink inscription on different owner (dated 1881) on front free endpaper which also has tear at lower fore-edge; pencil signature on front flyleaf; majority of rear free endpaper torn out; light to occasionally mild foxing throughout. Old piece of blue cloth tied into ribbon and laid-in at pages 42-43. B/w vignette illustrations inset amongst text. Binding is firm. A good+ antiquarian copy. This is an early reprint of the "First American" as OCLC cites the same statement on various Cowperthwait editions from 1848 to 1854.…
