607pp. Portrait. Original brown cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Three-cent "Indian centennial" stamp affixed to front free endpaper, bookplate on rear pastedown. Printed on poor paper and tanned, otherwise near fine. Cushman's parents were missionaries to the Choctaw beginning in 1820, and he lived among the tribes from that decade to the 1870s, making this "an indispensable source volume" (Gilcrease-Hargrett). Cushman had intimate and deep knowledge of the tribes, and this is a valuable and appreciative study of their history, leaders, and culture. HOWES C976. GILCREASE-HARGRETT, p.140.
