Discover the practical knowledge, proven management strategies, and essential farming techniques needed to raise healthy, productive Highland cattle with confidence.
THE HIGHLAND COW HANDBOOK is a complete and practical guide for farmers, homesteaders, livestock enthusiasts, and beginners who want to understand every important aspect of raising and managing Highland cattle successfully. Known for their impressive horns, long coats, hardy nature, and ability to thrive in challenging environments, Highland cattle can be an excellent addition to both small farms and larger livestock operations when they are managed correctly.
Written in a clear and easy-to-understand style, this handbook takes you from the foundations of Highland cattle ownership to more advanced breeding, feeding, grazing, health, and farm-management practices.
Inside this comprehensive guide, you will learn how to select healthy Highland cattle, understand their temperament and natural behavior, prepare suitable pasture and shelter, establish effective feeding programs, manage grazing efficiently, and maintain strong herd health throughout every stage of life.
You will also gain valuable guidance on breeding management, choosing suitable breeding stock, recognizing heat cycles, managing mating, caring for pregnant cows, preparing for calving, and supporting newborn calves during their most important early weeks.
Nutrition is another major focus of this handbook. You will learn how to balance pasture, hay, minerals, water, and supplemental feeds according to age, production level, season, and body condition. Practical grazing strategies are explained to help you protect pasture quality, reduce waste, and maintain healthy cattle throughout the year.
The book also explores responsible approaches to milk production and beef production, helping readers understand how genetics, nutrition, animal welfare, pasture management, and proper handling can influence productivity and meat quality.
Among the important topics covered are:
• Understanding Highland cattle characteristics, history, and breed qualities
• Choosing healthy cows, bulls, heifers, and calves
• Preparing safe fencing, shelter, handling areas, and pasture
• Feeding Highland cattle through different seasons and life stages
• Managing pasture, rotational grazing, and forage availability
• Providing clean water, minerals, and nutritional supplements
• Understanding herd behavior and safe cattle handling
• Selecting suitable breeding animals
• Managing mating, pregnancy, calving, and newborn calf care
• Raising strong and healthy calves
• Monitoring body condition and growth
• Maintaining herd health and recognizing early signs of illness
• Preventing common nutritional and management problems
• Managing parasites and maintaining farm hygiene
• Hoof, coat, horn, and general cattle care
• Improving beef quality through responsible management
• Understanding factors that influence milk production
• Record keeping, herd planning, and breeding records
• Managing Highland cattle during winter and harsh weather
• Reducing unnecessary farm expenses while improving productivity
• Building a sustainable and potentially profitable Highland cattle enterprise
Whether you are planning to purchase your first Highland cow, expanding an established herd, raising cattle for beef, managing breeding stock, or developing a small livestock business, this handbook provides practical information you can apply on the farm.
Highland cattle are naturally hardy, but successful farming still depends on good nutrition, responsible breeding, proper pasture management, preventive health care, and careful observation. This guide brings these important subjects together in one accessible resource.
