About this Item
Hand-coloured lithograph. Image size 13 inches x 10.5 inches. Good clear impression. Mounted in acid-free card. This is one of the 'Six Views in Canterbury' drawn by Cooper and one of the few topographical works that he produced. This version has been lightly coloured to highlight the interesting details of the Paris and London Royal Mail coach and its passengers outside the Coach and Wagon Office at the George and Dragon. The view is towards King's Bridge and the Weavers with St Peter's Street beyond, leading to the Westgate. The lithographs were published by Ward in Canterbury and printed and sold by Hullmandel in London and by various booksellers in Kent. Thomas Sidney Cooper of Canterbury (1803-1902) was a celebrated and accomplished painter of livestock, especially cattle. A fine example of this scarce Canterbury street scene.
