The diagnosis identifies the disease. The anesthetic plan must account for everything it changes.
A patient with heart failure faces urgent abdominal surgery. Pulmonary hypertension complicates ventilation. Hemorrhage changes the balance between oxygen delivery and demand. After an apparently stable operation, recovery reveals how little physiological reserve remains.
HIGH-RISK ANESTHESIA connects the mechanisms behind these challenges with the decisions they require—from preoperative assessment and preparation to intraoperative deterioration and postoperative support. Across 24 clinically focused chapters, this illustrated textbook explains how patient vulnerability, surgical demands, anesthetic interventions, and available resources shape perioperative care.
UNDERSTAND THE RISK. EXPLAIN THE PLAN. REASSESS THE RESPONSE.
Explore the clinical reasoning behind:
• Assessment and optimization: functional capacity, frailty, risk prediction, medication management, surgical timing, and shared decisions.
• Anesthetic strategy: drug selection, regional and general techniques, difficult airway management, ventilation, and physiological monitoring.
• Complex disease: cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, hepatic, endocrine, and neurological conditions—including interacting problems that create competing management priorities.
• Vulnerable populations: older adults, high-risk obstetric patients, children, neonates, and patients receiving anesthesia outside the operating room.
• Deterioration and rescue: trauma, hemorrhage, shock, cardiovascular collapse, respiratory crises, anaphylaxis, and other perioperative emergencies.
• Recovery and continuity: emergence, postoperative organ dysfunction, critical care planning, structured handover, and team performance.
CLINICAL TEACHING YOU CAN FOLLOW AND APPLY
Worked clinical cases connect observations with interpretation and management choices. Purposeful illustrations clarify anatomy, physiological mechanisms, and clinically important relationships. Decision pathways, comparison tables, and focused callouts highlight alternatives, pitfalls, and reasons to escalate care. Chapter questions with explained answers help readers examine their reasoning and identify gaps in understanding. Throughout, the emphasis remains on explaining why an approach fits, what its limitations are, and which findings should prompt a change of course.
Written primarily for anesthesiology residents, with relevance for practicing anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists, this book supports structured learning and focused review of demanding perioperative topics.
Deepen your understanding of high-risk anesthesia. Add this illustrated clinical reference to your professional collection.
