Brown smooth calf notebook (7 1/2 in. x 5 in.), all edges gilt. Handwritten notebook (lined paper, about 116 pages devoted to the science of chemical Assay, which is ".An assay is an investigative (analytic) procedure in laboratory medicine, mining, for qualitatively assessing or quantitatively measuring the presence, amount, or functional activity of a target entity". These detailed, scientific and chemical determinations often dictate future market status. It appears that the writer, one Robert Leigh of Cottage Grove Oregon, was engaged in serious study of analyzing and determining component percentages of any number of (mineable) metals. The entries run approximately 1899-1909 and are essentially comprised of "recipes" for determining yield from mined raw rock or soil.By 1905 Mr. Leigh gave his address as being in Bohemia, near Cottage Grove, Oregon. At this time, the Bohemia Mining District was going full speed ahead. Gold had been discovered there in 1858."."The Bohemia mining district is in Lane and Douglas counties, west-central Oregon. It lies on Calapooya Mountain, in the western foothills of the Cascade Range. The district is about 30 miles south- east of Cottage Grove, a small town on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Oregon and Southeastern Railroad runs from Cottage Grove to Disston, within 12 miles of the mines, which are reached by stage."
