The gap shows up in familiar, recurring ways: requirements discovered too late because nobody agreed where the system's boundary was drawn; verification that passes while validation fails, because the two were never clearly distinguished; a model-based effort that stays rigorous during design and then quietly reverts to disconnected documents once implementation begins; an AI-assisted component integrated without anyone specifying its actual operating boundary. Each is a known, recurring failure pattern that traces back to a systems engineering practice that was skipped, misunderstood, or applied out of order.
This handbook addresses that gap with one coherent treatment, following the discipline from its conceptual foundations through the technical and technical-management processes that structure real programs, into the modeling practices, digital environments, and artificial-intelligence tools reshaping how the work gets done, and finally into the tailoring judgment that decides how much process rigor a given effort actually needs.
Working through it, readers will be able to:
- Elicit stakeholder needs and turn them into a verifiable requirements baseline, then build functional, physical, and allocated architecture views from it
- Distinguish verification from validation, select appropriate verification methods, and construct a verification cross-reference matrix
- Apply a structured technical-risk and decision-management framework instead of relying on informal judgment calls
- Assess what a model-based approach and a connected digital thread genuinely add, including where a design reverts to document-centric practice by default
- Separate the two roles artificial intelligence plays in the discipline: a tool assisting a systems engineer's own work, and a class of component that must itself be specified, architected, and verified
- Compute reliability and availability measures and construct a failure modes and effects analysis with a calculated risk priority
- Apply a structured tailoring framework that converts a program's complexity and consequence profile into a proportionate level of process rigor
It is written for practicing systems engineers and program managers who want one current, connected reference rather than a shelf of disconnected specialty texts, and for advanced students and single-discipline engineers moving into systems engineering, who need a structured, example-driven path through the discipline's full scope.
Begin closing the gap between component correctness and system-level success with a structured, example-driven guide built around that exact problem.
