A conveyor stops at two in the morning. An overload relay may have tripped, a permissive contact may be open, or a control-circuit condition may be preventing restart. From the pushbutton station, these faults can look identical. Knowing how to trace the circuit methodically can mean the difference between a controlled diagnosis and hours of unnecessary component replacement.
Industrial motor control becomes difficult when straightforward components interact. A starting method affects protection. A variable-frequency drive can introduce insulation stress, bearing-current and power-quality concerns. A safety function must remain distinct from a process interlock. Decisions that appear correct in isolation can create problems elsewhere.
Handbook of Electrical Motor Controls connects these subjects in one practical reference. It covers conventional electromechanical control and modern drive-and-controller systems, helping readers work with old and new equipment found in industrial facilities.
Use this handbook to:
- Read and trace motor-control drawings, including ladder diagrams, device symbols, terminal designations, wire numbering, cross-references, and physical wiring.
- Understand and modify standard control circuits, including two-wire and three-wire control, seal-in circuits, reversing, interlocking, jogging, permissives, sequencing, and multi-motor control.
- Apply motor protection appropriately by distinguishing overload, short-circuit, ground-fault, phase-loss, and phase-unbalance conditions.
- Select a suitable starting method by comparing across-the-line, wye-delta, part-winding, autotransformer, primary-resistor, reactor, and solid-state soft starting.
- Apply and commission variable-frequency drives while accounting for load characteristics, current-based sizing, braking, low-speed cooling, reflected-wave effects, bearing currents, harmonics, and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Connect hardwired control with programmable systems by translating starter circuits into ladder logic and interfacing PLCs, field devices, starters, and drives.
- Separate functional safety from process control through risk assessment, stop categories, dual-channel architectures, Safe Torque Off, and zero-energy verification.
- Commission and troubleshoot systematically using pre-energisation checks, appropriate instruments, measurement sequences, symptom-based fault isolation, and predictive-maintenance techniques.
Sixteen chapters carry the subject from motor behaviour, contactors, relays, schematics, control circuits and protection through reduced-voltage starting, drives, power quality, PLC control, functional safety, panel construction, motor control centres, commissioning and industrial applications. Pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors, machine tools and legacy-drive retrofits show how the principles work together.
The appendices provide collected equations, symbols and device designations, a standards crosswalk, reference data, and a symptom-based troubleshooting matrix. Standards are identified by issuing body and edition, and quantitative examples state their assumptions.
Written for engineers, industrial electricians, maintenance and automation technicians, panel builders, commissioning personnel, and advanced students, this handbook is designed to be opened at the chapter matching the equipment or fault in front of you.
Keep it within reach whenever a motor-control system must be specified, installed, commissioned, maintained, or brought back into service.

Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to California Books, Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
