The standard work on the birds of Europe and the Mediterranean basin, widening and replacing the earlier classic study edited by H. F. Witherby, The Handbook of British Birds (1938-41). It describes over 740 species (of which about 600 are breeding species) occurring in the Western Palearctic. Each species has entries averaging about six pages of text, with distribution maps which are accompanied by specially commissioned colour plates, with egg plates at the end of each volume. The nine volumes comprise over 7000 pages and nearly 650 colour plates, in addition to numerous maps. and other illustrations in the text. An authoritative work in fine condition.
