Mother's Hen, San Francisco, California (1972) Rare first edition of this 1972 San Francisco small-press poetry chapbook published by Mother’s Hen, capturing the spontaneous, community-driven ethos of the Bay Area mimeograph revolution. Subtly subtitled 8 Poets Without an Editor, the collection reflects the post-Beat, countercultural, and politically engaged literary scene of early 1970s Northern California. Bound in vibrant yellow cardstock wrappers with striking psychedelic and surrealist line art by Michael Agostino (including full-page interior plates and swirling marbled endpapers), the volume brings together works by Louis Cuneo, Owen Hunt, Peter Kastmiler, Kevin C. Mahoney, Alice Rogoff, John Ross, Phyllis Speros, and Joan Howlett (whose surname is noted with a contemporary pencil correction over the printed "Agostino" on the contents page). A scarce piece of West Coast underground publishing history, merging avant-garde poetry, DIY press production, and period graphic art.
