Alternately titled "The Astrologer," this is the story of the struggles of characters in southwest Scotland in the 1760s-80s, with some parts set in Holland and India. Full black cloth-covered boards with coppery gilt spine titling and interlocked "EL" at tail of spine; orange topstain. In yellow dust jacket variant with black & white image of Harry Bertram (a character in the novel) as a child to front panel. --- With prior owner's bookplate affixed to front free endpaper, else a tightly-bound, unmarked, sound copy.
