The Truth About America’s Deadly Epidemic
Did you know that gun violence is the #1 cause of death among America’s children and teens? Or that guns in the home are far more likely to be used in killing family members than intruders?
A Powerful, Illustrated Guide to America’s Gun Crisis. In Gun Violence 101, criminologist Thomas Gabor, coauthor of American Carnage, and award-winning author and illustrator Violet Lemay expose the causes of gun violence and how America’s gun laws often do more harm than good. Featuring compelling research, original artwork, and shocking gun violence statistics, this book provides an urgent, eye-opening look at the true impact of guns in our society.
Many Americans have been misled by the gun lobby’s narratives, believing that guns in the home, gun carrying, and permissive gun laws increase safety. Instead, these policies have contributed to record-breaking numbers of gun deaths, mass shootings, and fatal road rage shootings. This book not only uncovers the facts about gun violence but also presents proven solutions to prevent gun violence, offering a roadmap for change.
The Essential Guide for Educators, Activists, and Policymakers. Whether you’re an educator teaching about the crisis, an activist advocating for change, or a policymaker searching for solutions, Gun Violence 101 is one of the most important books about gun violence today. With its accessible format and stunning illustrations, it joins the ranks of the best books on gun violence and is a must-read for those who want to separate gun control facts from fiction.
Inside, you’ll find:
- Eye-opening statistics that debunk myths about gun ownership and gun control laws.
- The real impact of gun violence on families, communities, and public safety.
- Expert-backed strategies for reducing gun deaths and creating safer communities.
Other startling facts about gun violence:
- Americans own 50 times more military-style weapons like the AR-15 today than in the 1990s.
- Fatal road rage shootings have more than doubled as more people carry guns.
- Just 6% of Americans own two-thirds of all the nation’s guns.
If you’re looking for gun violence prevention books, gun control books, or books that break down the reality of mass shootings and gun violence facts; or if you liked titles such as The Violence Project, Children Under Fire, or American Carnage, then you’ll love Gun Violence 101.

About the Author
Violet Lemay began her career as an editorial illustrator for clients including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Psychology Today. For the past decade, she's been involved in book publishing. Lemay has illustrated nearly fifty books, mostly for children, eight of which she wrote. Her 2023 picture book biography of a student victim of the Uvalde mass shooting, Alithia Ramirez Was an Artist, won nine awards including the Hoffer grand prize. Violet’s books have been translated into many languages. Her editorial and book illustrations have won many awards and are featured as part of the permanent collection of the Hyundai Museum of Kids’ Books and Art in Seoul, Korea. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Violet moved to New Zealand in 2015 where she now resides. She has also lived in China and Malaysia.
Fred Guttenberg began his public life after the murder of his beautiful fourteen-year-old daughter Jaime in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting on Feb 14, 2018. The day after the murder, Fred decided to attend a public vigil. While there, the mayor asked him to speak. His words shook a nation and he has not stopped since. Only four months prior to the murder of his daughter, Fred’s brother Michael passed away in October 2017 from cancer related to his service in 9/11 in New York City. He was one of the original first responders at the World Trade Center with a team of doctors who got trapped in the WTC as it collapsed. Amazingly, the room that they hid out in did not collapse and Michael and his team of physicians spent sixteen days at ground zero taking care of others. Following his involvement in these two distinctly American tragedies, Fred has traveled the country talking about both events but also talking about perspective, perseverance, and resilience. He discusses pivotal moments in our lives and how we respond to those moments, using his speech to inspire others. Fred and his wife Jennifer now spend time challenging elected officials to do more. They began a nonprofit organization dedicated to Jaime’s life called "Orange Ribbons for Jaime." He has been a regular on TV news programs and myriad online and print media. The nonprofit is now his full-time mission. He is the winner of the 2023 American Spirt Award for Citizen Activism.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
