Print on Demand. This book explores the development of reading techniques for students at the third-grade level, across three distinct ability groups: superior, average, and immature. The author recognises the need for varying teaching methods to meet the needs of each group, and provides teachers with a range of classroom procedures across the three groups. For superior groups, the emphasis is on independent word recognition and comprehension through a diverse range of techniques. The average group receives more guided instruction and support, while for immature groups, the focus is on the slow but thorough building of word recognition and fluency. The book encourages teachers to guide pupils in the use of picture, context, and phonetic clues, and a combination of the three, to develop power in independent word attack. The author places great importance on the integration of reading, writing, and spelling, presenting numerous activities to show how spelling can become a natural outcome of the word recognition program. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This program accepts the challenge that one of the most important functions of guidance at the third-year level is to stimulate pupils to think through what is read, to draw simple inferences, and to exercise simple judgments which lead to simple conclusions - in Other words, to answer questions which call for individual thinking and which are not couched in the words of the text. Pupils are constantly stimulated to associate Story experiences with their own experiences and to judge their truth accordingly.
Again in this program great care is taken to show how reading, writ ing, and spelling can be integrated and how spelling ability can become a natural outcome of the word recognition program: Phonetic spelling is not introduced, but syllable division and accent marks and the use of the glossary are fully developed as a basis for the use of the diction ary in the fourth grade.
