Item description from seller

Zooplankton constitutes a fascinating, divers and abundant group of animals living in the upper layers of the seas arround Australia. Zooplankton contains representatives of a ll the major invertebrate phyla including some that can only be found in the plankton. Since they are the principal diet of most of the larger pelagic animals, including commercially important fish, their study is an essential component in forming a more complete understanding of the functioning of marine ecosystems. They are easily captured in simple nets with fine mesh, but because they are small, identification is often difficult. There is presently no simple guide to the common types of zooplnaktonic animals in the Australian region. Although this book is number 10 in the Fauna of Tasmania series, it will be equally useful in other areas of temperate Australian and New Zealand estuarine and costal waters. 91 pp., 56 b/w figs, spiral bound, gr. 8.
