Print on Demand. This book explores the political evolution of the United States Constitution and the country's growing pains with regard to the expansion of its territory. The author traces the development of the sovereignty of individual states, the clash between Northern and Southern states over the issue of slavery, and the eventuality of the Civil War. The author suggests that the very structure and limitations of the Constitution, far from being a weakness, are in fact the greatest strength of the United States as a nation. The author argues that, while the government has expanded beyond the Founders' expectations, its balance of power between the federal government and the individual states allows conflicts of interest to be resolved peacefully and justly. This dynamic preservation of peace serves as a testament to the wisdom of the Constitution's architects, and it has made possible the United States' long-standing stability and success as a nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
Writer was never the disciple of any party, and hence never wrote for victory, but for the elicitation of truth, while much in the articles that seems partisan, the author wrote before the advocated tenets were adopted by any party. Territorial self-government, for instance, on which Mr. Buchanan has been elected President, is advocated in the piece entitled The Wilmot Proviso, but the author pub lished it under his own signature, August 24th, 1847, be ing several months before the first advocacy Of the princi ple by Senators Cass and Dickinson, whose conspicuous position arrested thereto partisan attention. The pieces are reprinted substantially as they were originally publish ed ia various periodicals, when the respective topics engaged public attention; but they are arranged in an order dicta ted by the topics, the papers relating to the General Gov ernment being placed before those relating to the State and the Miscellaneous articles being grouped together after the Political and they are all now respectfully dedicated to the young men of America as aids to reflection.
