About the Author
Cole Scanlon is an author and entrepreneur with expertise in education, economic development, and health policy. He is the co-founder and co-director of Fair Opportunity Project, an edtech nonprofit that sends free college application advice to almost every public high school in the US, and the Lab for Entrepreneurship and Development, a research lab he co-founded at Harvard's IQSS. Cole won Forbes 30 Under 30, is on the Advisory Board of Yale's Center for Digital Health and Innovation, has degrees from Harvard and Oxford, and previously worked for The World Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Google. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harvard Gazette, and Forbes.
My focus and passion is social impact. After graduating from Wesleyan University, I spent some early days with Planet Propaganda and then earned my master's and doctoral degrees in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I've led winning teams selected for gener8tor's gBETA Social Impact program, StartingBlock Madison's Social Impact Initiative, and Schmidt Future's Alliance for the American Dream competition. I teach undergraduate classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on social and policy issues in education. At the Center for Academic Excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I developed communications strategies for reaching different audiences about the challenges of student access and success for first-generation, students of color, and low- income college students. I provided early research and policy support for the launch of WISCAPE, a campuswide research and policy center for postsecondary issues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked for Chancellor David Ward at UW-Madison. As Executive Director for a statewide education nonprofit, we partnered with K-12 schools, students, and parents on accelerated and advanced curriculum programs.
