About this Item
Soft Cover - Staple Bound. Very Good. (Japanese Philately, Vol 20: No 2, Part 2) Washington, DC, The International Society for Japanese Philately, Inc, April 1965, 4to, paper wraps stable bound, 45 pp. Brief "Series Forward" by Robert M. Spaulding, Jr. An extensive illustrated study of Japanese cancels during the first "few months" the modern postal system was in operation. The modern Japanese postal system opened in April of 1871. This study focuses on the post offices up to 1872 with emphasis on those located on the Tokaido. An amazing accomplishment. The author presents over 1500 hand drawn facsimiles of Japanese postal cancels and provides the English name for the post office. After the illustrations there is a 9 page "Index of Early Japanese Post Offices" with a "Table of Date Conversions for 1871 and 1872." In the index, the post office names are given in English (romanization) and Japanese and the opening date is provide. The date conversion table is invaluable in reconciling Japanese dates before between 1871-1872 when Japan did not use the Western calendar. Also included are appendices to assist in translating dates and terms often associated with Japanese philatelic material. Seller Inventory # 1965050116c
