La République romaine meurt, mais ne se rend pas vite : il faut à Appien les cinq livres des Guerres civiles pour raconter sa longue agonie. Le livre III se termine par la blessure mortelle qu'en août 43 lui inflige Octave, quand il force Rome à l'élire consul. Le livre IV s'ouvre sur ce qui ressemble à un coup de grâce, l'instauration du Triumvirat. Octave, Antoine et Lépide s'octroient tous les pouvoirs et procèdent à une nouvelle « proscription » : la liste des individus à décapiter contre récompense est affichée et toute solidarité avec eux interdite. Contre les massacreurs, les proscrits inventent des cachettes, des moyens de fuir, ou bien meurent, parfois crânement. Le courage de leurs proches, voire de leurs esclaves, en sauve certains. Lâcheté, trahison et cruauté se donnent libre cours, mais la République vit encore. Sextus Pompée contrôle la Sicile et dirige une flotte. Brutus et Cassius, chefs du complot contre César, ont rassemblé des armées considérables et sont maîtres des riches provinces de l'Orient grec, alors que les triumvirs ne tirent rien de l'Italie et de l'Occident, exsangues. La lutte finale a lieu à l'automne 42, à Philippes, au nord de la Grèce. Appien évoque d'abord cette période de sang et de fureur par une longue suite de brefs tableaux retraçant le destin des proscrits, puis il peint une grande fresque de la confrontation finale, sans cacher où vont ses sympathies. Quand il écrit, la République est morte depuis deux cents ans, mais son souvenir alimente toujours la réflexion morale et politique. En français, La roue à livres 308 pages dont 3 cartes 13,5 x 21.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Calepinus, la librairie latin-grec, La Chèvrerie, France, +33 (0)5 45 30 69 27, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
