Short, concise explanations of basic legal terms, the knowledge of which is necessary not only for the study of legal history, but furthermore also for the understanding of applicable law, quickly introduce the reader of this work to the subject area under discussion. The subsequent legal historical explanations themselves outline German legal development with its European references and deal primarily with institutions that have survived several eras.
The work focuses on sources and basic features of law from the various phases of Central European history, starting with the time of the Germans through to the 21st century.
Particular emphasis is placed on the presentation of developments that have significantly influenced our current legal system. The treatise concludes with an inventory of the applicable legal order and opens up an interesting perspective for the reader with the view of the continuities and innovations.
The authors Prof. Dr. Andreas Roth holds a chair for German legal history and civil law at the University of Mainz. The work was founded by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Gmür †
