Item description from seller

Colles, H. C., ed. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Third Edition. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1935. Volume II (D-J) of five volumes. Large octavo, publisher's dark green cloth with gilt spine titling and decorative lyre device on front board. A substantial reference work covering composers, instruments, theory, and musical terminology, illustrated with plates and musical examples throughout. Book is Very Good: sound and well-preserved with a firm, square binding and clean text overall. Cloth shows moderate rubbing and some dulling to the spine, with light wear at extremities. Interior is notably clean for the period, with no ownership marks. There is a creased front free endpaper from prior shelving (structural only, no tearing). A bookmark or insert remains adhered at page 193, likely from long-term placement; it has not been removed to avoid damage. Scattered light foxing and mild toning present, primarily to endpapers and margins, consistent with age. Edition/printing: Third Edition (1935 reissue), as stated on title page; copyright page notes earlier copyrights (1904, 1906, 1927) with 'Published with new material, November 1927; Reissued, 1935.' This is a standard Macmillan reissue of the third edition, not a later facsimile. Sir George Grove (1820-1900) founded the original dictionary, which became one of the most authoritative reference works in Western music. This third edition, edited by H. C. Colles, expanded and updated Grove's scholarship and remained a standard resource for decades. …
