This book requires a previous course in quantum theory, but the matrix algebra is included as an appendix. A series of examples of varying levels of difficulty follows each chapter. This is directed to research students in physics and chemistry, and introduces the three main uses of group theory in quantum mechanics. These are (1) to label energy levels and their corresponding eigenstates; (2) to discuss qualitatively the splitting of energy levels starting from an approximate Hamiltonian and adding correction terms, and (3) to aid in the evaluation of matrix elements of all kinds, in particular providing general selection rules for the nonzero ones. BINDING/CONDITION: paperbound; a few tiny stains on the top edge of t he text block, otherwise in Very Good condition. appendices, references, bibliography, index. 8vo (8.5 inches tall). 468 pages.
