Excerpt from The Grip of Fear
Once or twice before, as he sat with his elbows on the table, at a late hour, in a restau rant, under the flaring lights, amid the musty odours of f ood and the perfumes of women's toilettes, surrounded by constant movement and deafened by gipsy music, with dazed brain, with sight and hearin g exasperated by the colours and the noise, he had experienced the same sudden and clear sense that he was some body, and that he had in himself the germ of great achievements. He had said to himself Ah! At this moment, if I had a pen, ink, and paper, I could write somethin g immortal. Alas! At these mysterious times, when another self seems to spring into being and to trans form the old self, the pen, the ink, and the paper are never at hand.
And so now, in the stillness of the winter night, under the sharp caress of the wind.
