It?s a proper old-school paperback ? the kind of book that looks like it has spent time on desks, in satchels, in lecture halls, and in the suspiciously quiet corners of second-hand shops where serious reading goes to brood. Expect honest wear consistent with being read and carried, but still solid, intact, and ready to judge you. Leavis?s mission is both simple and slightly terrifying: to argue that English fiction has a ?great tradition?, and to name who belongs in it. He does not do this in the modern spirit of ?everyone?s valid? He does it in the spirit of ?some of you are excellent, some of you are not, and I have brought reasons.? The result is criticism with the force of a verdict. If you?ve ever wanted to watch someone take the novel seriously enough to make it feel like a moral arena, this is your ticket.
