Add to basketMore fun to read than most of them ever were to watch. The Great TV Sitcom Book is an abundantly illustrated evocation in words and pictures of virtually every sitcom ever aired between 1949 and 1980. Bubbling with hilarity, half-remembered moments from everyone's past, and a wealth of both belly laughs and nostalgia, here is a long and loving - though by no means uncritical - look at a unique TV art form that, despite disclaimers to the contrary, is dear to every viewer's heart. Often re-creating a show's particular style with the best dialogue and most outstanding episodes, the author captures virtually every sitcom from the form's electronic infancy in 1949 with The Goldbergs to today's hits and flops. Remember Private Secretary, Mr. Peepers, My Friend Irma, Our Miss Brooks? The Great TV Sitcom Book plays them back with rare photographs and total recall of casts, story lines, spinoffs and much more. Remember talking horses, dopey schoolteachers, mothers who turned into cars, dads who were always lovable buffoons? Rick Mitz not only remembers what was aired, he recounts the behind-the-camera gossip that reveals what it really took to get all that good clean fun on the screen. Written with wit and verve, this huge family-and-friends entertainment book is like a stroll through a familiar neighborhood to visit old and new friends like the Cleavers, the Andersons, the Bunkers, the Ricardos, Mary, Maude, and Margie, Chico, Amos, Topper, and Mama - and to get to know better such current companions as Hawkeye, Flo, I.averne and Shirley, the inimitable Fonz and scores of others. And just to spice things up, the author pulls no punches in evaluating the shows' entertainment quotients, social reference points, and reasons for success or failure. Complete with an amusing history and analysis ("Sitcomments") of the form, definitions of technical terms, and a rundown of offscreen events that sparked each season, The Great TV Sitcom Book is so lively, all you have to do is turn it on and it practically reads itself. All orders shipped protected in a box. This is a large book and will require extra postage.
