From the Publisher
Since 1923, Time magazine has taken the pulse of the century week by week, and the result is an unparalleled chronicle of our times. Now the editors of TIME have opened their archives to create this lasting portrait, Great Events of the 20th Century. Here are the rise and fall of nations, rulers and empires, from the death throes of Hitler’s Nazi Reich to the birth pains of Israel, from the advent of the Iron Curtain to the toppling of the Berlin Wall. Here are the breakthroughs in science, as man first splits the atom, sets foot on the moon, and clones a sheep. Here are the gleaming wonders of King Tutankhamen’s tomb - and the lingering sorrow of the Challenger’s last voyage. And here are defining moments in the arts, as we first encounter Picasso in Paris, Brando on Broadway and the Beatles in America.
Richly illustrated with historic photographs from the Time Inc. archives, the volume includes many of the signature images of the century. It offers readers both a sweeping historical survey and a spectacular visual journey through this most memorable of centuries.
