About this Item
Large-paper limited edition of 150 copies printed on Dutch handmade paper. Full navy morocco, gilt spine-titles, gilt filet on board edges, elaborate leather doublures with silk flyleaves, top edge gilt, (bound by the Monastery Hill Bindery), 8vo, 22 cm, vi, [1], 228 pp, ills. Rosenblum comments: "Traces the collecting of books from antiquity to the nineteenth century. Some of the figures here, like Sir Thomas Bodley and Petrarch, are familiar, though the Eltons' discussion even in these cases in valuable. Other figures are likely to be less familiar to the general reader. Niccolo de Niccoli of Florence, for example, an important figure in Renaissance humanism, assembled one of the finest libraries in Italy and allowed the general public to use it. Gian-Vincenzio Pinelli of Padua also built a library open to scholars. Well-written and attractively illustrated." Copy No.89. Leather booklabel on inside front board of Carl Adolph Kroch, sometime head of Kroch's and Brentano's, for a long time the largest bookstore in Chicago, and at one time the largest privately owned bookstore chain in the USA. Kroch would have been dismayed to see that the expensive binding on his book has split along the front joint, with the front board detached. Contents Very Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-19398
