Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of function in book design. It examines the relationship between the practical needs of the reader and the demands of a commercially successful product. The author delves into the specific design elements that contribute to a book's utility, such as running heads and typography. The text also grapples with the tension between tradition and innovation in book design. The author discusses the merits of incorporating past styles while arguing for a contemporary approach that reflects the unique characteristics of the era in which the book is being created. The book ultimately emphasizes the importance of creating books that are both beautiful and useful, recognizing that these qualities are not mutually exclusive. It encourages designers to consider the full range of their audience's needs, from aesthetics to practicality, to produce truly meaningful and enduring works. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

To these speakers who served their arts without monetary reward and then, at great additional expense in time and effort, revised their talks to fit the requirements of book form sincere thanks must be given. A special word of appreciation is due Philip Hofer, whose admirable summation of the four meetings was one of their out standing features and whose words, as they appear here, have suffered severely in color and content because of limitations of space; Mr. Hofer's generous acceptance of drastic editorial abridg ment matched in quality the excellence of the commentary with which he brought our meetings to a close. It is a pleasure also to acknowledge the cordial hospitality of John P. Coolidge, Director of the F ogg Museum, and his entire staff. I am sure that The Book builders of Boston, the Press's partner in the symposium and in the publication of this book, will allow me to express our joint gratitude to all.
