The Reverend William George Lawes (1839 - 1907) was an English minister and missionary, an expert on Papua, and the first permanent European resident there. He settled in Port Moresby in 1874, became expert in the Motu language, was friendly with the south coast tribes, served as advisor to the colonial governor Sir Peter Scratchley, and produced the first Papuan language book. 12mo, x,108pp. Orig. black morocco binding, nicely rebacked, gilt title at front board.
