3pp ads, 'Soldiers' and 'Sailors' contemporaneously inked over; sl. affected by damp at beginning & end of text. Uncut in sl. later brown cloth, expertly recased. Pearl 96, published 7th December 1818. Not a simple book of grammar but an attempt to 'create numerous formidable assailants of our insolent high-blooded oppressors' by using political examples to illustrate the rules of the English language for the working-class reader. The obliteration of two occupations from the titlepage is mysterious, and perhaps hints at a previous owner's objections to the military. Seller Inventory # 85925
