A reissue of the 1747 edition, the work having been first published in 1742 under the title 'Ancient Architecture', this edition without date but variously recorded betweeen 1790 & 1793. The 7pp. 'Historical Dissertation on Gothic Architecture' re-introduced after its omission in the 1747 edition. 'A pioneer attempt to make Gothic architecture intelligible to an age brought up on the classical orders.'- Colvin, Biographical Dictionary of British Architects. Quarto (29 x 23.5cm). pp. [2],7,[1],64ff. With an engraved title & 64 copper plates, numbered A, B & I-LXII. The title with a small closed tear to margin. Contemporary calf with later reback, scuffed & rear board with repaired area, however a sound copy externally, the title slighty foxed but the contents fresh & clean. Vg.
