Gospel of Mary Magdalene: The Missing Pages: Recovering the Lost Revelation

Four pages are missing from the centre of the Gospel of Mary.

They disappear at the most tantalising moment in the surviving text. Mary is recounting a private revelation given to her by the Saviour. She asks how a vision is perceived. His answer turns on the nous, the mind between soul and spirit, and then the manuscript breaks off in mid-sentence.

Four pages later, the Gospel returns with the soul already ascending through the Powers.

For more than a century, everything between those two points has been silent.

But the silence is no longer empty.

In 2023, the Greek Christian papyrus P.Oxy. 5577 was formally published. It preserves a teaching addressed directly to Mary: water, fire and spirit; flesh and incorruptible light; intertwined elements and their dissolution; the good Father; and a striking reference to Mind manifested in flesh.

The Missing Pages shows how this fragment belongs within the lost section of Mary’s Gospel.

Duncan Smart follows the evidence from the manuscript itself. The surviving Berlin Codex fixes both boundaries of the four-page loss. P.Oxy. 5577 supplies ancient material that fits the conceptual movement required between them. The Gospel constrains the passage from vision and nous to transformation, liberation and the ascent of the soul. Related early Christian traditions, including Pistis Sophia, preserve the same wider pattern: Mary as visionary, questioner, interpreter and the woman who understands.

The physical leaves remain lost. What can now be recovered is the revelation they once carried, from evidence that has survived in different places.

The investigation begins with the extraordinary modern history of Berlin Codex 8502: its appearance in Cairo in 1896, the scholars who struggled to publish it, a destroyed print run, two world wars, forgotten scholarship and the long delay before the Gospel of Mary became widely available.

From there, the trail leads through the Greek witnesses to the Gospel, the publication of P.Oxy. 5577, the work of Sarah Parkhouse and Elizabeth Schrader Polczer, and the textual, theological and codicological evidence that places the fragment within the missing centre of Mary’s revelation.

At every stage, the argument is tested against what actually survives. Similarity alone is not enough. The fragment is measured against the physical boundaries of the lacuna, the order of its surviving sides, the Gospel’s theology of dissolution and restoration, the sequence of the Powers and the wider early Christian memory of Mary.

The book culminates in a continuous recovered English reading of BG 11–14 the four missing pages... followed by a clear evidential chain showing what is physically preserved, what modern scholarship has established and where reconstruction is required.

The recovery is disciplined by the evidence. Where ancient wording survives, it governs the reading. Where the Berlin Codex fixes the narrative boundaries, those boundaries govern it. Connective language is supplied only where the physical loss requires it.

What begins with Mary’s question about vision develops into a revelation about mind, flesh, transformation, incorruptible light and the soul’s freedom from the Powers.

At its centre stands Mary Magdalene: witness, visionary, interpreter and bearer of a revelation that has been silent for more than a century.
