From the Author
Most travel guides are written the same dull, boring way. They slog their way across the state region by region, town by town, until you fully understand why kids are always asking, "Are we there yet?" I wanted Good Times in Texas to be different. After all, I'm kind of different. Some people would say, way different. So this book is organized the way you THINK, not by the way somebody who doesn't even know you tries to plan your travel. This is a book written to be taken out into the trenches (or at least kept in the glove compartment) and used as you are rolling along, not while you are slouching on your couch trying to figure out where to go next weekend that's not boring. For example. You're cruising along U.S. 285 between Fort Stockton and Sanderson and see well-dressed people driving nice cars picking up dead jackrabbits off the road. You know times have been bad in West Texas what with low oil and cattle prices, but they can't be THAT bad. You say to yourself, "Self, this is weird." So you simply turn to the chapter in Good Times in Texas titled "Weird, Wacky, and Wonderful," look up Fort Stockton, and voila! there's your answer in the paragraph "Cruise for Roadkill." Or perhaps you are over near Beaumont and have a sudden attack of the hungries for some real Texas food, namely, barbecued crabs. So you turn to Chapter 2, "Yummies," look up Beaumont, and there staring right back at your beady little crab-eating eyes is the scoop on Sartin's, the best place in Texas or anywhere else to spend a couple of hours ripping apart small crustaceans and slurping up their innards. The topical organization of the book lets you find what you are interested in, whether it be music, festivals, parks, historical reenactments, rodeos, or scenic drives. And within each topic, the information appears alphabetically by city so no matter where you are, or what your idea of fun is, you can quickly pinpoint where it is you need to be. Neat, huh? Good Times in Texas is a distillation of fun things I've discovered in 25 years of traveling and writing about Texas for Texas Highways and Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazines and various guidebooks. It represents one of the few projects I've ever done in which the publisher let me do whatever I wanted to do. (Well, they did make me take out all references to boogers, but other than that, they let me be as weird as I wanted to be.) Hit the road with a copy of Good Times in Texas, have fun, be safe, and if you discover a nifty place that's not in the book that you'd be willing to share, please let me know about it so I can put it in the next edition. Now buy the book! I have bills coming due!
