This memoir presents a fusion of New England and global foodways as experienced by the author, who grew up in a bicultural household on the multiethnic island of Nantucket and then had a career that took her far and wide in the world. She writes about her family members and close neighbors, all of whom were passionately involved with making good food and sharing it with others. Recipes, both old and new, are included.
About the Author: Frances Ruley Karttunen was born in Boston in 1942 and brought home to Nantucket at ten days old aboard the SS Nobska. She had an academic career in linguistics based at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2000 she has lived year-round on Nantucket, devoting herself to writing local history, especially the dynamics between the “descended Nantucketers” typified by her Nantucket grandfather and his family and the people she refers to as “the other islanders,” including her immigrant grandmother. More than a simple fusion of New England and Scandinavian cookery, she sees her home cuisine as an expression of Nantucketers’ historic cosmopolitanism and global curiosity.
