Item description from seller

vi + 140pp, frontis, illus, original blue cloth over boards, canvas style binding, dw. AJS: By the author of The Old 'Country Trade' of the East Indies. One of two companion books, written by a naval officer who became fascinated by the history of seaborne trade in the Indian Ocean. There are chapters on the East India Company and their ships; the later steamship companies; shipbuilding in India; the pilgrim trade and many others. The term 'country trade' used in the first book, was defined by the author: '.to include vessels owned by Englishmen resident in India, as well as purely Indian ships, and seems to have applied as far back as the end of the seventeenth century'. Commander Coates was killed in action on the 15th July 1917, when HMS Redbreast was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
