Not Gonna Let Him InSome walls aren't built to keep people out-they're built to see who cares enough to knock. After a devastating divorce that dismantled her self-worth, biology teacher Maggie Chen returns to her late grandmother's creaky Victorian on the shores of Lake Ontario. The house, aptly named Haven, is meant to be her sanctuary-a quiet place to heal, to hide, and to rebuild the fortress around her heart that years of emotional manipulation destroyed. Her grandmother left her one final gift: a paid contract for a kitchen renovation with a local contractor, and a letter with a single instruction. Let him in.Maggie has other plans.Nate Calder shows up on her doorstep with a toolbelt, a thermos of black coffee, and the patience of a man who has done his own time in the wreckage of a broken heart. A builder by trade and a fixer by nature, he learned the hard way that you can't renovate someone who isn't ready to be restored. When Maggie meets his honest handshake with a chain on the door, he recognizes the look in her eyes-it's the same one he wore after his own marriage crumbled. But a summer storm, a blackout, and a bathroom leak that's one rainfall away from disaster force these two guarded souls into close quarters. As Nate painstakingly strips away water-damaged tile and restores neglected floorboards, an unexpected partnership begins to bloom. Between shared sandwiches at noon and candlelit confessions during power outages, Maggie discovers that Nate isn't just rebuilding her grandmother's kitchen island-he's quietly dismantling every defense she has.Their chemistry is a slow burn that neither saw coming: the gentle brush of calloused fingers over hers, the way he remembers she takes her tea with honey, the steady 7:58 AM arrival that becomes the most reliable rhythm in her shattered world. He doesn't push. He doesn't demand. He simply shows up, day after day, proving through sawdust and small kindnesses that some men build things instead of breaking them. But the past doesn't surrender easily. When Maggie's manipulative ex-husband appears on the porch of the very sanctuary she has fought to create, every lock she's clicked into place is tested. And when a career-making renovation project in another city threatens to pull Nate away just as their fragile connection deepens, Maggie must confront the fear that has ruled her since her marriage ended: is she strong enough to let someone in, knowing they might leave?Content Advisory: This novel contains themes of emotional abuse recovery and divorce, handled with sensitivity and hope. Seeking refuge in a coastal sanctuary after a traumatic marriage, a guarded woman must decide if she can lower her defenses when a steady contractor begins repairing more than just her crumbling home. Not Gonna Let Him In
Some walls aren't built to keep people out-they're built to see who cares enough to knock.
After a devastating divorce that dismantled her self-worth, biology teacher Maggie Chen returns to her late grandmother's creaky Victorian on the shores of Lake Ontario. Maggie has other plans.
