Putnam s Sons, New York, 1883, frontispiece, 15 engravings with folding map in rear, 483 pp plus publisher s list, brick colored illustrated cloth, 8 x 5.75 , 8vo. In fair condition. Antiquarian ex-library of Bigelow Free Public Library. Plate pasted on front board. Light wear to extremities with scuffing to edges and corners. Light crushing to spine ends with minor soiling to surface of cloth. End papers quite toned. Internally good with light toning at edges and minor instances of foxing. Poorly repaired leaf 253-54 with non-archival tape. Free of known markings. Binding shaken but intact. Please see photos. An epistolary account by the famous woman traveler of the late part of her 1879 trip to the Far East, presenting her observations on Hong Kong, Canton, Saigon, and the Malay Peninsula. Observations on the criminal classes of Hong Kong, night life of Canton, Naam-hoi prison, punishment and torture, Portuguese missionaries, Anamite life, European life in Saigon, the Malacca jungle, opium farming, slavery and local flora and fauna are included.
