New Copy. Temple Sutherland's classic memoir recounts the years he and his wife, Sam, spent living in a remote bush camp in the upper Buller district during the depths of the Great Depression. Hoping to make a living from gold prospecting, they embraced a rugged, self-sufficient lifestyle surrounded by native forest, relying on hunting, fishing and the companionship of their much-loved black cocker spaniel, Angus of Windylea. Rich in descriptions of New Zealand's wilderness, wildlife and pioneer spirit, the book is both an engaging personal memoir and a vivid portrait of life in the back country during challenging times.
