The first edition of an intriguing history into the mythologies of particular giants exhibited across towns and cities, with a colour frontispiece. The first edition of Gog and Magog: The Giants in Guildhall; Their Real and Legendary History, with an account of other civic giants at home and abroad, written and illustrated by English antiquary and wood-engraver Frederick William Fairholt. In the publisher's decorative original purple cloth, with blind stamp detail. Contains a colour frontispiece, and all ilustrations, including those on plates. Collated complete. Publisher's original advertisements to the rear. An intriguing look at giants that are displayed within cities including London, Antwerp, Brussells and Norwich, providing information and the fictional tales behind each. He looked at number of niche histories since elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1844, including on tobacco and on costumes. In the publisher's decorative original purple cloth, with blind stamp detail. Externally, mostly smart, with slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Slight fading to joints and edges. Brown end papers are clean, with a couple of faint marks. Minor browning to previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, wear to hinge between pp.80-81, and a loose plate adjoining p.89. Pages are bright and clean. Good.
