REVISED WITH EXPANDED ANNOTATIONS IN 2021
Lieutenant Edward Settle Godfrey’s diary offers a rare, firsthand account of the legendary Battle of the Little Bighorn and the dramatic events surrounding Custer’s Last Stand. This expanded 2021 edition presents the complete field diary from May to September 1876, along with Godfrey’s historic Century Magazine article, frequently cited by historians and scholars of the American West.
Godfrey, commander of K Company, 7th Cavalry, served in Captain Frederick Benteen’s battalion and played a key role in the Reno-Benteen defense during the harrowing days of June 25-26, 1876. This military diary reveals unique insights into General George Custer’s leadership, the tense atmosphere among soldiers, and the daily realities of cavalry life on the frontier. Readers will discover vivid anecdotes, battle strategies, and emotional accounts of survival under siege.
Perfect for fans of American history, military memoirs, and Native American studies, this annotated edition captures the humor, drama, and intrigue of the Last Stand at Little Bighorn. Includes rare details on cavalry movements, camp routines, and pivotal moments in U.S. military history. Discover why Godfrey’s writings are essential reading for students, scholars, and anyone fascinated by 19th-century battles and frontier adventure.
