As well as we can reckon it, this is the first English translation of St. Gregory's Five Theological Orations and Two Letters to Cledonius in over one hundred years. Described as ''a peculiarly vivid and quotable exponent of the doctrine of God in Trinity,'' St. Gregory of Nazianzus was distinguished as ''the Theologian'' for his particular insight and exposition of Trinitarian doctrine -- which the Orations illumine in a clear and rather wondrous fashion. The Letters present a focused series of reflections on the person of Christ and refer repeatedly to the debate surrounding ''non-Biblical'' doctrine. St. Gregory reveals to us ''a truly golden chain of salvation. From the Spirit. our rebirth, from rebirth. a new creating, from new creating a recognition of the worth of Him who effected it.''.
