About this Item
Offset color lithograph. Image measures 9 3/4 x 7 1/2". Sheet measures 14 1/8" x 10 5/8". Unsigned. The original print of artwork from Maurice Sendak's 1965 "Lullabies and Night Songs" was part of a boxed set released by Harper and Row in 1971. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak," the set includes original prints of images from the author's books, here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. This particular image features the text from the folk song "Go Tell Aunt Rhody", popularized in America in the mid-19th century but believed to have originated in 18th century Europe, composed as a gavotte by Jean-Jacques Rousseau for his opera "Le devin du village". In this print, Sendak illustrates the song in a storyboard style. It shows various characters moving from one scene to the next, telling the story with a rhyme. The rhyme is both whimsical and dark, characteristic of Sendak's books which were criticized by some as being controversial for children. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued. Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was an American illustrator and writer known for his children's books. Producing illustrations for other authors as well as for television, he is best remembered for "Where the Wild Things Are," which is considered by some to be one of the first contemporary picture books. This print is a lovely example and memento of his work. Scarce. Seller Inventory # 296822
