Only two volumes out of a five volume set are included in this listing: Tomus Primus & Tomus Tertius (Volumes 1 & 3)Written entirely in Latin. Loosely translated into English: "Glossary of Medieval and Late Latin Writers, by Charles Dufresne, Sieur du Cange?Councillor to the King and Treasurer of France at Amiens. A New, Expanded, and Augmented Edition, prepared by the Monks of the Order of Saint Benedict, of the Congregation of Saint Maur. Volume I. Paris, at the sign of the Olive Tree of Charles Osmont, on the Rue Saint-Jacques. With the King?s Approval and Privilege."This is the foundational and still widely used historical glossary of medieval and late Latin. Charles du Fresne, sieur du Cange (1610?1688), a French scholar, antiquarian, and historian, first published it in Paris in 1678 in three folio volumes. It systematically records Latin words that had acquired new meanings, become rare, or entered the language from vernaculars and other sources during the Middle Ages, distinguishing them from classical Latin.ABOUT THIS SET: This is only two volumes out of a six volume set, Volume 1 and Volume 3. Volumes MISSING / NOT PRESENT are volumes 2, 4, 5, and 6. The two Volumes 1 and 3 are bound in matching calf leather. Covers are plain. Hubbed spines bear six raised bands. Hubs are ornamented in gilt tooling. Both volumes have a dark burgundy leather label stamped in gilt lettering. All edges red stain. Turn-ins on inner boards are ornamented with gilt tooled decoration. Marbled endpapers in clay blue, teal, burgundy, gold, and white. Title pages are red and black ink with an engraving in black and white. Pages are dual columned. Each book is very large, measuring 15.75 inches tall x 10 inches wide. On a shelf, these two volumes standing side-by-side measure five inches. - TOME PRIMUS: Contains glossary words beginning with the letters A-B. Frontispiece in black and white, in addition to the title page engraving, and is illustrated occasionally throughout with other wonderful engravings and ornamented initials, also in black and white. xc, 1393 pp. - TOME TERITUS: Contains glossary words beginning with the letters E-K. 1678 pp. CONDITION: In both volumes, the exterior bindings are significantly worn with erosion of the leather in places and tears, especially along each spine. Inner hinges and outer joints are cracked, yet boards still remain well affixed. Leaves have mildly toned with occasional discoloration and foxing, yet text is fully legible. Discoloration within endpapers. Unmarked except for previous owner's name written in antiquarian dipped ink on the verso side of the page (left side) within the front endpapers of both volumes. Even with its flaws, these are fascinating volumes with a sense of significance about them. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology.
