Review

'The essays are of high quality and this is a most useful contribution to understanding Reformed liturgy. It was good to be reminded more than once that liturgy must be able to stand theological critique and there are particularly good chapters on the 'fascinating and important. An impressive variety of topics is covered in the seventeen essays.' Ian Bradley, Theology in Scotland To Glorify God is not only an excellent guide to the two service books but provides pertinent, sometimes fascinating, criticism of them. The book should interest not only liturgical scholars but all Protestant ministers. 'Douglas S. Bax, 'The stage of twentieth-century liturgical revision is now behind us. Now begins the equally important stage of interpretation of the new rites and the exploration of the formation and motivation of the liturgical revisers. This Trans-Atlantic effort by a panel of internationally-known experts is a major advance in the process for everyone interested in Christian worship and especially for those in the Reformed Tradition.' James F. White, Professor of Liturgical Studies, University of Notre Dame. 'This book is to be warmly welcomed. It is important that liturgical developments in the English speaking Reformed tradition be critically examined and assessed, and this volume will be of interest to all those who use and study these service books.'Douglas Murray, Trinity College Bulletin 'This volume offers much to stimulate and challenge any student of protestant liturgical reform. Its value extends well beyond the denomination whose texts provide its focus. If you are interested in the complex interplay of theology and liturgy, you cannot ignore this book.' Jill McCoy, Australian Journal of Liturgy 'The best essay is from one of the editors, Iain Torrance. He explores questions of the boundary and distinctiveness of the Church through their baptismal rites. In so doing he addresses questions which confront almost every denomination in almost every place. There is much stimulating material here.' Michael J. Townsend, "Methodist Sacramental Fellowship Bulletin" '...these essays provide a most valuable and erudite commentary on two remarkable books of worship.' Carol Wilkinson, Lancashire, "Theology"
