This is a viewbook featuring printed black-and-white photos of the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Contains many views of utter destruction and catastrophe from the natural disaster. A few of the photos show scenes of the city when the fire was still active. Among the subjects depicted in the photos are panoramic views of San Francisco in ruins; refugee camps in Golden Gate Park and other places in San Francisco; a few scenes of the earthquake's destruction in Oakland, Napa, and San Jose; and ruins of the Palace Hotel, Market Street, churches, the city courthouse, various businesses, Mark Hopkins Art Institute, streetcars, City Hall, Powell Street, Clay Street, Orpheum Theater, and the Fairmont Hotel. Many photos show people wandering about the destroyed city. Some of the photos show scenes of San Francisco preceding the disaster such as two that show a print shop in Chinatown and a city corner in Chinatown and others that show various parts of the city intact. One of the photos shows "Angel's Flight" in Los Angeles, unaffected by the earthquake. The last few photos show Stanford University appearing to be largely intact (may be photos of the university preceding the earthquake). The photos are accompanied by brief captions.…
