A window into New York’s gas-lit nights and the lives that kept the city moving.
This collection blends vivid scenes with sharp, anecdotal reporting from the streets after dark.
With first-person narration and field sketches, the book surveys station-house dramas, late-night encounters, and the odd moments that reveal the pulse of a city that never fully sleeps. It’s a brisk, immersion-style look at urban life, seen through the eyes of a writer who records the night’s dramas with wry humor and clear observation.
- Compelling vignettes from station-house vigils and midnight rescues
- Character sketches of hackmen, policemen, and the everyday figures of the street
- Snapshots of crime, drama, and resilience that shape a city at night
- A voice that blends reportage with personal reflection for a vivid urban portrait
Ideal for readers who enjoy atmospheric, street-level history and noir-tinged storytelling; this edition offers a candid look at New York by gas lamp and lamp-black, in the spirit of Glimpses of Gotham.
