Add to basketThe Life of Robert, First Lord Clive by Rev. G.R. Gleig is a detailed biography of Robert Clive (1725 - 1774), the British officer and statesman who played a central role in establishing British control in India. Gleig traces Clive?s rise from a modest background to his pivotal role in the British East India Company, emphasizing his military brilliance, strategic acumen, and political influence. The book covers key events such as the Battle of Plassey (1757), which secured British dominance in Bengal, and his administrative efforts to consolidate power and reform governance in India. Gleig also examines Clive?s personal character, highlighting both his ambition and the controversies surrounding his career, including accusations of corruption and his struggles with political opposition in Britain. Written in the 19th century, the biography reflects contemporary Victorian perspectives, blending historical narrative with moral reflection, portraying Clive as both a national hero and a complex, flawed figure. The spine has been cracked at the front endpaper and there is an owners inscription on the front endpaper, boards are bumped with front top board slightly damaged.
