Giselle, an intelligent girl living in London, exchanges her life and body and mind with Minati, an orphaned girl surviving on the streets of Northern India. Meanwhile, Giselle, now living as Minati, dedicates herself to helping the orphaned children find work at the local sugar cane plantation. She also discovers unexpected, romantic feelings for Bhopa, a fellow orphan. As Minati, living in England as Giselle, trains to fulfil her wish to become an Olympic athlete, she struggles with schoolwork and then faces a knife attack.
