- Book 4 of 5: The Late-Diagnosed Mind
There is a class photograph of you at about eight. You are at the end of the second row, hair very neat, hands folded in your lap, looking slightly to one side of the camera. Anyone who saw it would have seen a quiet, tidy, well-behaved girl. A pleasure to teach. No trouble at all.
They would have been right about all of it. And they would have missed everything.
This book is about that girl. For decades, autism was understood almost entirely through studies of boys. The tools used to assess it were built on boys. So the quiet girl who followed every rule, read the same books thirty times, copied the other girls to fit in and fell apart behind a closed door at home was called shy, sensitive, bookish or fussy. Almost never autistic.
The commonly quoted ratio is four autistic boys for every girl. But when researchers pooled the higher-quality evidence, the ratio was closer to three to one, and they concluded that many girls who met the criteria were simply never diagnosed.
Many of those girls are now women. Some of them are reading this.
Inside, you will find:The Two Columns for a childhood. What they said about you, and what was actually happening. Why "a pleasure to teach" so often described effort, not ease.
Copying the other girls. The studying, scripting and borrowing that let you fit in, and what it cost.
The one best friend. Why so many autistic girls lost their friendships around eleven or twelve, when the rules of friendship changed overnight and nobody explained the new ones.
Interests nobody thought were strange. Horses, books, a band. It was never the subject. It was the depth.
When it went inward. Anxiety, depression, eating difficulties and the other diagnoses that came first, and why they so often missed what was underneath.
The word was shy. The one word that explained everything, and therefore nothing.
The joy nobody mentioned. Because the girl did not only struggle. She also found deep, particular happiness in the parts of the world that suited her.
Each chapter ends with Gentle Practices you can use right away. This book does not focus on adult masking and burnout. It goes further back, to the girl herself.
She was not shy. She was not difficult. She was not too sensitive. She was autistic, and nobody noticed. You can notice her now.
Part of The Late-Diagnosed Mind series.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
