Paperback. "Gilles De Rais: The Original Bluebeard" offers a compelling and scholarly investigation into the life of one of the most enigmatic and sinister figures of the Middle Ages. A distinguished 15th-century nobleman and a loyal companion-in-arms to Joan of Arc, Gilles de Rais reached the heights of French society as a Marshal of France before his descent into a world of alchemy, occultism, and horrific crime. This biographical study meticulously traces his journey from military heroism and immense wealth to his eventual trial and execution in 1440. The work explores the psychological complexity of a man whose life inspired the chilling legend of "Bluebeard," examining the intersection of religious devotion and extreme depravity. By contextualizing his actions within the social and political landscape of the Hundred Years' War, the authors provide a haunting portrait of a fallen aristocrat whose deeds have left an indelible mark on historical and folkloric records. This account remains an essential resource for those interested in medieval history, true crime, and the origins of cultural myths. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
