Publication: London, John Murray, 1982 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xii, 277. Condition Report: Near Fine. The binding remains tightly bound and square, with the blue textured cloth boards bright and the gilt tooling to the spine unoxidised and sharp. The corners are crisp, showing negligible shelf-wear. Internally, the pages are highly clean and free from foxing, exhibiting only a whisper of age-toning to the text block edges. A neat, contemporary previous ownership signature ('eric john alston.') is present to the front free endpaper. The unclipped dust jacket is vibrant and well-preserved, though it exhibits some very faint rubbing and minor creasing to the extreme spine tips and upper edges, presenting beautifully overall. Catalogue Note: A handsome 1982 second printing of John Keay's highly regarded historical account, originally published in 1979. This edition retains the striking original dust jacket artwork and includes the complete suite of photographic plates and maps that chart the perilous explorations of the Western Himalayas. The book bears a tidy previous ownership signature, adding a touch of straightforward provenance without detracting from the crispness of the preliminary pages. As a reprint, this edition offers an accessible yet highly presentable copy for readers and collectors of Central Asian exploration and Great Game history. InÂThe Gilgit Game, John Keay masterfully chronicles the dramatic and often perilous exploration of the Western Himalayas between 1865 and 1895. As the British and Russian empires vied for supremacy in Central Asia, a geopolitical rivalry famously dubbed the 'Great Game,' the remote, unmapped territories of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram became the ultimate frontier. Keay brings to life a cast of eccentric explorers, spies, and military officers who braved extreme altitudes, hostile terrain, and political intrigue to map the region and secure the vital mountain passes. It is a thrilling narrative of Victorian adventure and imperial ambition set against the backdrop of the world's most formidable mountain ranges.…
